Check engine light 900

1992 965 with 158K on the clock. It stopped running on my wife today( I think she ran out of gas)Got in this afternoon and the check engine light is on, she said "Oh, I never notice that light!". Is there any way without any diagnostic tools to find out what caused that light to come on?
