1990 740 - Disengages 700 1990

I am a novice mechanic, trying to learn as I go, and am having a problem diagnosing my wagon’s current problem. Here is the scenario:

- Driving more than 35 MPH
- Car disengages (almost like someone put it in neutral)
- Loses power
- When I push on the gas, nothing happens (no rev)
- Tach stays at whatever it was when car disengaged (does not drop to zero unless stalls)

- Sometimes car comes to complete stop and stalls (but starts right back up)

- Other times car engages again like nothing happened
- This happens a few times a week

Any thoughts?
