Brake light problem with 1989 244 200

"The right rear taillight is out, and when I put on the brakes, all the lights go out instead of getting brighter."

This is what my daughter says happens with her new 89 244. Any suggestions for her would be appreciated. I'm not in the same town as she is so I can't look at it for her. She'll be checking the forum and hopefully registering soon.
