Grinding noise 200

I have an 89 240 automatic with 180K miles. The problem is a metalic grinding noise that starts at typically the 3rd? gear shift at around 40 mph. It disappears if I depress the pedal harder but will hear it again if I stay within 40-50 mph but will disappear if I step on the pedal harder. At the lower or higher speeds I don't hear it. Any suggestions as to what it may be? Please help! Thanks!
