740T fuel pump hell? 700 1988

Volvites,
My '88 740T died a while ago. I found some trouble in the tank and replaced the in tank fuel pump and rubber fuel line 'connector'. I also replaced the fuel filters (in tank and out). After doing this, the car ran...poorly but it ran. Then it stopped running. I disconnected the fuel line from the fuel injector 'bar' and saw there was no fuel getting up to the engine (fuel pressure is zero). I then disconnected the fuel line at the inlet to the main fuel pump and measured a large flow from the tank to the main fuel pump (so the in tank pump is pumping well). I checked for a clogged line between the engine and the fuel filter...it looks OK. The problem seems to be the main pump.

The main fuel pump vibrates when powered on the bench. It seems to be working but something ain't right. Do these pumps die but still vibrate? Is it time for a new main fuel pump also? Any other advise?

Thanks in advance,
Dave h
