losing my patience with my electrical system in my 65 122s 120-130

So I installed a new MSD ignition, new MSD blaster 2 coil, regapped my
spark plugs, and had a problem with engine run on. Installed a diode in
the charging light wire, which solved the run on, but kept my battery from
charging. Took out the diode, installed a grounding kill switch and it worked
perfectly.

For about a block, then engine died.

The only thing I can thing I can think of is that the new system is more
than my current point and condenser 60's era distributor can handle. Its
making a rather hard to describe high pitched ping from the distributor when
I try to start it. Ive considered ordering a 1975 Volvo 240 distributor ( the 1975 Volvo 240, the missing link of volvos). My reason being is that its a breakerless distributor with vacuum advance. Its only 20 bucks more than
ordering a simple pertronix system.

Has anyone had these problems? Does this sound like a concievable solution?
Im about one more headache from going to an auto electric shop, but I really
dont want to do that.
