Problem with / Questions about M-46 700 1990

Within the past few months, the M-46 in my 90 744T (122K)has started to disengage from second gear. It will only do it only when there is no load, and not every time - it stays in gear when accelerating. I can hold it in gear but the lever seems to move about 1/2 inch front to back, again, not every time. The only problem that started about the same time is a mild vibration which feels like metal-to-metal. My Indy shop says it could be internal (possibly a synchro) but I wonder if there are any other possible causes, eg, bad trans mount or problem with linkage. Could low or bad trans fluid be the problem (even though it happens only in 2nd)? I plan to change to Redline synthetic atf - FAQ says that it may solve some shifting problems, but doesn't seem to address this one. FYI, The motor mounts are less than 5K old and in good shape. Any info/thoughts about causes/fixes would be appreciated.

Also, if the trans is on the way out, I have an M-46/OD from an 85 244TI (that lost the battle with rust) with about 120K and a rebuilt OD. Will this fit a 744T? Thanks.
