93 Volvo a/c fan not acting right....help appreciated 200 1993

My Air conditioner/heater fan is not acting right. When i start the car it does not come on, and the only way i can get it to come on is to bang the passenger side of the dash near the floorboard, about left knee high right where the ducts are. Called the volvo dealer and he said either a relay or motor was probably bad. any other ideas to try? also he said it was about 700 dollars to replace the motor due to labor intensive. If i got a new motor, is it very hard to replace if i tried it myself? thoughts are appreciated. thanks!
