Hi,
Driving back on the last day of vacation, i ran out of gas. Put in a gallon it started right up. went to the gas station filled the tank, left the car running all was fine. Always use super, 2 miles later the engine cut out and I coasted into a parking lot. Car would turn over but not start. did this several times and let the car sit. Sprayed starter fluid into air filter, car started right up and then died after 1 minute. Tried this 3 more times until it back fired and the air filter caught fire. Put the fire out with an extiguisher, white powder, firemen hit the engine with 15 seconds of water. The only visible damage is the melted air cleaner cover.
My garage says it won't start unless I pay 850.00 for a ECM. Then that may not even work and no guarantees. I presed the mechanic to tell me if he tried to start the car but I got a verbal dance that makes me question what he did do.

I need help in asking the right questions and if I can attempt to repalce thse parts on my own. Bought the Chilsons book but I not sure after reading it where to start. Or should I get it towed to a dealer for service. this is my first Volvo and I love this car. I really want to keep it going.
