what is purpose of up arrows on handbrake cable drum spreaders? 200 1989

Dear Brickboard,

I just finished putting new hand brake shoes on my wife's 1989 240 sedan.

I noticed that the spreading mechanism at the drum end of the cables have arrows etched into them. Below the arrows is written "this end up".

The thing is that there is really no "up" position to install them in. (that is if you consider "up" to be pointing at the ceiling) The mechanism is positioned roughly at a 45 degree angle on the drum in relation to the ground.

So I pointed the arrows up hill at a 45 degree angle at least.

Does anyone know what the purpose of the arrows are? Please advise. Thank you.
