Urgent advice needed: Battery dead in both cars - coincidence or sabotage?

Hello, all.

I just got back from two great weeks in Hawaii that my expecting wife and I enjoyed immensely. Some nice 240s on the islands.

Before I left, I found our sedan's battery was dead. I didn't have time to fix it, so I let it sit. I had been playing around with a bulb in the back and blowing fuses regularly - and I guessed that there must have been a short somewhere and the dead battery (unable to jump) must have leaked out all its juice, and was in for replacement anyway. I also need to buy a new tail light housing.

Then, when we returned from our trip last night, I took the wagon to pick up some dinner and it died on the freeway. The acceleration all of the sudden moved to a very dull response, and then the car died all together as I coasted to the side of the road and got towed home. No crank when I tried to start it. Could this be anything besides a dead battery or a bad alternator? What are some other possibilities - fuel pump relay? Fuel pump? There is no turn over and the battery is dead. Could it be that both batteries just needed to be replace close to the same time?

I teach college and park both cars on campus - could anyone be draining my batteries or sabotaging the cars somehow because they didn't like their grade? Sort of a stupid question - maybe I've been watching too many films.

ANY advice or thoughts are greatly appreciated. I'm going to pick up a new battery this afternoon and see what happens. I am now carless with the semester beginning and a beautiful pregnant wife who needs to drive to work!

Best regards,
PU
