Check the odometer's famous little gear. I think there's info in the 700 FAQ. IPD sells a replacement kit with instructions on a DVD. You can also find them on Ebay. I've bought them from speedo repair shops that service VDO instruments (Volvo OEM).

It is not a difficult repair, but you must be careful.

...And this may be the most expensive Volvo part, on a cost/pound basis, that you will ever, ever, EVER buy.
