AMM testing for the stupid 200

OK - I admit it. It is amazing how some simple things (like using a voltmeter properly) can elude you for 40 some odd years of life. Can someone please walk me through the AMM testing process?

The only thing I know about my AMM is the fact that when it is unplugged, my engine fires up and maintains an idle. When connected, idle will not hold more that 2 seconds. Before I buy one I want to make sure it is dead.

Thanks for any help that comes my way.
