Nope! If you were getting a short there would be blown fuses or smoke.

Something is disconnecting. In adition to the switch look at the battery posts and the set of big fuses in the fuse block right next to the battery. Maybe corrosion had gotten to one of them and is causing the connections to be intermittent.

Buy an inexpensive multimeter from Radio Shack or an Auto parts place and start checking the connections the next time it happens.
