These questions are best handled by having a copy of the wiring diagram for your car in my opinion. I've messed with that system a couple times and I would have been lost without my manual.
Follow the manual links in the FAQ to locate the Volvo manuals. None of the others are of any value for this problem.
You can test the alarm by getting in the car, arming it and then opening the door from the inside.
I think you are correct in the direction you are heading.
