kickdown cable adjustment - help 700 1997

The first thing I thought was old fluid and too low fluid. My 740Ti shifts really late into 4th gear if the fluid ends up too low.
Have you checked the cable at the connection on the transmission?
It sounds like the cable may be adjusted right, but the mechanism it controls could be tweaked. How many miles does it have on it?
