Well, Brent seems like a decent guy with a family, but the moped I bought from him was hardly "complete" and "just needing an engine install." Several important bits were missing, but I was still worth the $50.00 I paid. He told me that the moped was part of a two-bike deal. He also said the Amazon came from another part of MO - not very local to Wentzville. That's the normal state of it. If you get one where the original owner is handy (or alive) you have really lucked out.
So... I poked around that car a bit, mainly looking under the hood and offering him some advice on the clutch MC. He was leaning towards keeping it when I was out there two weeks ago. I offered him some parts to help out. I did not "connect" that it was the same car until you mentioned the yellow plug on the weber and the hanging PCV hose. Did he at least give you that spare M40?
I wish I could say you got a good deal. I did not follow the auction to the end. I know he was wanting around $2,200 - which I though was way too high for such a car around here (comparatively, my 68 130 cost me only $1500.00 and it was loaded with rare spares and hand stuff from the first owner - it did need a fuel tank and a new brake setup...)
Anyway, I am fairly sure you did not get screwed. That weber is reasonably valuable and the paint on the car is in much better shape than mine. The glass is good all the way around. Most local Volvos don't last too long with the salty roads and the failing rubber seals. They are rather generally uncommon around here.
I moved out of central MO 10 years back, but I head out to K.C. once and a while. If you need something specific I could drop it by.
I have three of these things and a good stash of spares eating up the limited space in my garage.
I'd recommend prowling the K.C. craigslist ads. If you can catch an rusty 1800 you can use all the mechanicals (including the overdrive gearbox) on your 66. An 1800 is essentially the same chassis - just shaped different on the outside.
There was just an 68 1800S in a junkyard in Wentzville (STL Craigslist) if you feel like another drive...
Feel free to e-mail me off list for help.
