the 90 series cars are pretty much the same as the 900 series. The only thing that changed in 1997 was the name badges and the interior got upgraded.
If you want to compare the RWD to the FWD cars, I suggest that you look under the hood of both and take stock of how much room you have to work in. In a FWD car, you have both the engine AND the transmission under the hood stacked on top of eachother (not to mention all the exhaust, wiring, piping, cooling, etc). In a RWD car, the transmission gets shoved under the floorboards. So it makes a lot more room, and a generally simpler setup to work in.
The 940s are the eveolutionary step between the 740s and the 960: It has the same 4-banger engine as the 740, but the body/interior and suspension is closer to that of the 960. There's alot to be said for that robust little fourbanger.
