Double-check all the wiring; the wire frayed on my 1990 765 and was causing intermittent speedo readings; my local independent Volvo-specific shop fixed it for me in a jiffy. Sounds like you're going the right way to solving the problem. As for where to buy, eBay is a good friend for us older Brick owners, as are local pick 'n pull yards. There's a particular eBay seller I've dealt with, Tom's Auto Parts, that have always been very helpful for me, and they stock a lot of Volvos.
