I think I may have solved the problem today. It goes under the heading of "Always look for the little things first." I pulled the small manifold hose that runs to the flame trap and checked it out. It was pretty brittle, and there was a small crack in the bottom of it. The fit on both the manifold pipe and the flame trap were kind of loose. I pulled a piece of fresh hose from my stash and replaced it. I now have positive pressure. Now I guess I'm left with tackling the water pump, timing belt and tensioner.... :(
I'll also pull the trans and replace the main seal. It will give me an opportunity to clean any accumulated oil off of the clutch; hopefully it's not toast.
