I'm not sure what you are describing but it does not sound correct.

If you get a JY rack make sure it does not leak, and the 4 tie rods have no play in them. Grab all the mounting hardware as you take it off to install in your car. Either style rack will fit and work fine but there is a slight difference in the mounts.
