I drove a 85 model 245 wagon for about 5 years without a fuel gage for this very reason.
I could not get the float back out of the tank, and I really needed the car so I put it back together and used the odometer for a fuel gage.
That old 245 got 25 miles per gallon, and I never ran out as long as I kept up with the mileage.
