It`s more blackened because that`s where your leak was. Spray those nuts and the broken stud with something better than WD40, like PB Blaster or Aero- Kroil. Doing applications everyday for 3 or more days would be best. I did not have to separate the manifold from the exhaust pipe , but it does make it more difficult to clean the mating services and they need to be spotless.
