I am in the process of getting a Volvo tach repaired , and I am told by the repair person that the early dash mount tachs only work with points. They are a current loop in that the signal from the coil goes directly through the tach. The pulse to the points induces a signal into the tach. Not picking a fight
just saying. Test the tach before you make a hole in the dash like I did.
