I clearly misunderstood as I thought the problem was in the transmission.
If you look in a Volvo parts catalog, you will see that Volvo sold very little in the way of parts for the instrument clusters. And if you needed a replacement internal part your only option was a factory rebuilt replacement cluster or a speedometer repair shop.
As I just said in a post about Xena, the speedometers can be repaired. But it usually takes a donor cluster for parts as new parts are scarce.
