Start problem 900 1995

Hi,

I too question the term replaced ignition. That could entail a lot of things! So along with that empty statement made by you something was not explained to you. Time to get rid of that mechanic, that hit your wallet and time for you to hit some books.

You said you already replaced the starter so we will write that off.

I will start with asking how old and in what condition are these batteries. It sounds like they are not getting charged or holding a charge.

Get a cheap but decent voltmeter and put it on the battery terminals and first check voltages not running and then running when lights on or off and then fan blowing inside. Post them on the board.

The next thing would be to look for a overnight drain of current from the battery. This will not take all night though. (:-)

Using the 10 ampere function first or a milliamperes (ma) setting on the meter, later!
Put the leads in their respective post holes or dial setting to achieve these two functions.
You will need to take two separate readings.
Have the car turn off and shut down completely. This includes have all the doors shut including the truck and glove box door.
Undo the negative cable from the battery and place the meter leads between the two.
This puts the meter in series with any current draw from the battery that may drain the battery.

You want to see zero's as they are your friend. Definitely nothing to left of the decimal point in whole number on largest range.
The smallest range you want 0.02 and up to 0.05 to be normal. Anything higher is subject to being a problem. Post what happens.
If higher, there is something that is on that should not be. If it is to be on, its drawing too much during idle times. I.e. Alarm systems or remote start systems or butchered wiring?

Your statements about the gear shift makes me think the car is not cranking over. Please clarify.
If it's cranking and still dead, that is another issue.
We need to if its flooding with a gas smell or not.
The Crank Position Sensor turns on the ignition system and "fails sporadically" and is very dependent on having a good battery source to run everything else, it tells to run.

By the way, I do not own or work on any 900's. I do 240's.
I bare know what's underneath them except what I see in the junkyards.
I cannot get any more specific in details.
I couldn't make my disclaimer in any smaller print either!
(:-)
Phil
