For your no start problem, if I understood correctly I would suspects a problem with the ignition switch or the circuit that prevents the car from starting in other than N or P. Have you tried giggling the gear selector to see if maybe theres a short.
Also hook your volt ohm meter to wire coming from the ignition to the starter and see if you're getting 12 volts. If you get 12 volts then maybe the starter has a problem.
Steer away from the parts replacement method, you just spend a lot of money needlessly. unless there parts that need replacement anyway.
