Re: dashpad replacement...YES!! finally 120-130 67

I replaced the dashpad of my 1969 Volvo Amazon (I beleive you Yanks refer to it as 121) last summer with a new one from vp-autoparts.com. Excellent result. The old one had cracked in two places, and you could see the old yellow foam through these cracks.

I started out by ripping the old one out and carefully cleaning the metal underneath with all kinds of nice chemicals =)) to remove any remains of the old one. The metal chrome border below the dashpad was also removed (that one screw to the left of the steering wheel is one nasty bugger to remove!). I then attached the new dashpad near the windshield using the screws holding the old one in place, applying two component glue (Epoxy) to the frontmost (towards the seats) region of the metal to fix the dashpad in place (the metal chrome border obviously won't do the work). I used three clamps and some cloths to (carefully but firmly) hold things in place while the glue hardened. Be sure to apply just the right pressure - too loose and there will be a gap between the dashpad and the metal chrome border, too hard and you will leave permanent pressure marks in your new dashpad. Putting the metal chrome border back in place is a walk in the park...

A good piece of advice is to start from the left, working your way to the right. It is important that the new dashpad is fitted correctly over the speedo, which is a lot easier if you start from the left.

The new dashpad I put in wasn't identical to the old one in terms of material. The new one is much better, being one single part in stead of a yellow foam glued to a black vinyl top. This makes the choice of glue much easier, as the new material is far more solid.

Hope this helps.
