Odometer broken 200 1983

The other day my odometer stopped working on the way home from work. I assumed that a tooth or the teeth to the odometer gear had broken.

When I got in the car in the morning, it started to work again. Didn't work in the afternoon the it worked again this morning.

What would cause this strange behavior. Can someone tell me how to locate the odometer gear. What have other people done to remedy this situation. (Maybe the cheapest way besides not fixing it?)
