Erratic idling afflicting my carb 245,

Rich, if this happened to me "out of the blue", or even concurrent with the onset of colder temperatures, I'd suspect the fuel supply before the motor.

Could you have gotten a bad tank, perhaps one with more than the usual amount of water? Condensation affects petrol station tanks as severely as auto tanks.

This is a bit knee-jerk, but it couldn't hurt to rule it out.
