The alternator's adequacy or inadequacy shouldn't matter, although I think it is just fine as long as you aren't running a number of high-drain aftermarket items like additional fogs, etc.
As I understand the problem he describes (which is identical to my own problem) charge is fine at cruising speeds or any movement above idle. In fact, my alternator runs perfectly at the top end of "normal running voltage" when I am driving. Its in idle that this problem surfaces, and the voltmeter (yeah yeah, the dash mounted version is inaccurate, etc) drops down low and then begins to fluctuate.
I've been in the car at idle with the headlights off, radio off, etc., and it STILL does this. I still don't understand about the tachn fluctuation when the headlights are turned off...
