I have 212000 on a GL. Still as strong as it was in 88. Castrol GTX 10/30 or 10/40 in winter and 20/50 in summer. Use a quality filter and change it every 3500 miles. Take the oil cap off and look inside. It should look shiny and clean in there. If not add a half quart of Rislone every change till it cleans up.
This will clean the motor slowly and safely. Don't use a motor flush. This may break loose sludge that could clog oil passages. I agree that synthetic may not be the best choice. It is expensive and in my opinion unneeded in a non-turbo.
