R 134 is a refrigerant which was developed some years back to be used in place of R 12. The R 12 is not friendly to the atmosphere. The R 134 is supposed to be. A retrofit requires completely purging the system of R 12, changing some fittings/nozzles and refilling with R 134. We had this done to our 740 and the compressor was changed at the same time. However, that was included because the compressor had failed.
