You can't take an M46 out of an 81 240 DL without taking the engine out, can you?

The shifter hits the floor before the trans is able to drop out. Before I cut a nice big slot to allow for the shifter to move backwards... is there any way of taking the shifter off with the trans still in the car? I have the four bolts that hold the armature out...but the linkage is still in place. This is the last thing I have left in order for the trans to drop. This has been one nightmare after another. Ever tried getting all 8 of the housing bolts out with the engine still in the bay? Not fun. All in all, if this works, I will look back at the project and say "that was fun". If it doesn't, I'll probably get a nice $30 at the yard for two tons of metal.
