You can't take an M46 out of an 81 240 DL without taking the engine out, can you?

Hi Bob-

I've done it in the past month, and I can't remember how I did it.

The shifter is attached to the linkage by a set screw, allen type, at the bottom of the shifter. Remove that and see if the shifter will come off for you. I know that's what people told me to remove, I just don't remember if that's what I did, or if I just removed the shift knob and reverse gear collar. Either way it was brutal. I was junking the car so I didn't care about the motor. Tranny survived, though- it's in a friend's 245.

Yes many of those bolts are a pain in the ass. Mine was simpler as the head was already out.

Don't despair- you will triumph. Just go back out there and bring a larger hammer with you this time...

-Dylan
