When I did the T-belt in my daughter's '84, I couldn't see the timing mark for the aux-shaft either. I used some spray cleaner (motor cleaner I believe) and cleaned the metal shield behind the aux shaft gear. Then I could see the mark which was only a light crease in the shield. A light shining from below helped to make the mark stand out better.
