Now indicators only light up, do not flash, 240 wagon, 1980

Hi Janet -

Do the emergancy flashers work OK? If not, chances are that you just need a new flasher relay. It is a DIY job.

The Volvo parts book shows the same p/n for 200's, 700's and 900's from 1975 on. The number is 9442468-6. They are a dealer parts counter profit maker. If a recycle (junk) yard is your choice, get 2 or 3 to be sure one is good.

Get access by removing the kick panel by the driver's right foot. That takes a little planning. First remove the felt knee padding. Then have a look, with a flashlight, at the point where the panel is hooked in up near the firewall; having a mental picture of how it goes back in is helpful. Then remove that plastic holder thingie near the floor - takes a big flat tip screwdrived and a 1/4 turn only. At the top of the panel is a Phillips head bolt, it needs only to be loosened.

The relay usually has a metal clip and is attached to the vertical support piece near to the control panel. It has a lot of wires to it. If you need to use a screwdriver to pry the relay off the base, unhook the battery first. Do not be tempted to not re-attach the clip - the sound of the clicking will not be audible.

AFter all that, put in the new one and test it. If OK, put all the stuff back together. The panel connection by the firewall is a PITA. I do that one first, sometimes having to squeeze two hands back there. Once it's in, the rest is easy.

Good Luck,

Bob
