You might consider adding a low coolant sensor setup. Check out the FAQ's for details. I run them on all (4) of our Volvos. Nobody can watch the gauges all the time.

Just find a hot lead from the fuse box to a red light (Radio Shack) on the dash (in your line of sight) and connect it to a normally open float switch and then to ground.
