To me the main thing is that when your wheels are straight ahead your box
is in the center of travel; that is, it'll turn as far left as it will to
the right. Many steering box/arm combinations have one spline missing so
that you have to line it up right.
By "relay arm" I assume you mean the pittman arm or the steering arm
that attaches to the steering gear. I would normally identify the
idler arm (on the other side) as the relay arm.
