The instructions for assembling the oil pump drive gear and distributor
are a little hard to make out because the installation positions they
give are based on the firing of #4, not #1. Both fire at the same top
dead center but 360° crank degrees apart. Your backfires may be because
of the accidental firing of #1 and 4 or #2 and 3 at the same time, which
can occur because of dirt in the distributor cap or other current leakage
paths. Another possible cause is one or more sticky exhaust valve, not
closing fully.
Have you checked your valve clarances? Should be 0.020"/0.5mm, NOT less.
