Car will not start or run. It left me stranded 700 1992

Im almost %100 sure its your air mass, i was messing around with my car one day well putting a transmission in and i removed the air mass as i was useing the alternator as a stop pully when putting the bolts into the fly wheel, anyways i forgot to put the ait mass plug back on and it started fine but the minute i gave it gas it died right out same thing when i put it into gear, plugged it back in and wala everything was fine. keep in mind when the air mass goes you have the fuel smell because theres enough gas but not enough oxy getting in there to explode. you can really test it by pulling the plug and seeing if anything changes or really if it runs the same off you deff know its bad.
