LSD for 744 700

I am not an expert on LSDs. I will give you my opinions.

1. The TrueTrac can't lock up. It is a gear type locking differential in which the gears move and wedge themselves tighter to give traction to the non spinning side. I can get tight, but it won't lock like a Detroit Locker is always locked.

2. It does not lock at speed, only resists the rotation of one axle relative to the other based on torque differences.

3. No difference with automatic transmission.

Nothing happens suddenly with the TrueTruc. It just gives great traction.

The 4x4 guys who really abuse stuff like the clutch type LSDs because they are harder to break. The pressure on the clutches can be increased for driving preference.

I have a 1984 Toyota Landcruiser which we often use for skiing. I will not install a front or rear LSD in it because it will compromise handling on ice. The Toyota hasn't run out of traction yet, and it doesn't need anything to make it handle worse.

As I have previously stated, my current preference for street driving is the TureTrac over the clutch type LSD. If my experience in the future shows me that the clutch type LSD would be better for my street driving, I will go back to one.
