high pitched squeals from under the hood? Belts?

It sounds like one or all of your belts may be getting dry. From your description, your belts are slipping.

1/4 of play is hard to describe. The belts can't hang 1/4" but they also should not be tight as a banjo string.

It sounds like you should snug the belts up a bit.

Bushings on Alternator and AC also wear causing the pulleys to 'cock' a bit. usually the belts squeal all the time then.
