Dude, not to get too fussy here but "an alternator is NOT just a generator with the voltage regulator built-in". The whole point if an alt., is to reduce the the size /weight of a gen. and increase output (that's how come a 55 amp alt takes up half the space of a 35 amp gen). Alts produce 3 phase a.c. and then a rectifier turns it into d.c. A gen produces straight d.c. As far as complications are concerned it's 6 of one.... Personally the alts have given me more success and they are easier to R&R.
