'67 122 w/ 17' Wheels...Concerns? Danger?

I recently purchased a beautiful "67" 122 with a B20, separate header, single exhaust. 40K miles. Runs and runs. It has 245/45/17 tires/17" wheels. On talking to IPD it was brought to my attention that the added stress on the tapered axle might be a problem. I know, this is one opinion. I'm not racing it, but it sure corners...and I sure don't want to flip on an axle breakage. I've talked to another person who said he's had monster wheels on 122's forever, no problem. Any thoughts? Danger Will Robinson!! Should I change the rear out NOW! (I'm a little melodramatic.)

Also, I wonder what the limit people have had lowering 122's with progressive springs. I don't bone jarring, or well rubbing. Is this a contradiction? Am I having my cake and eating it too? Ideas?
