engine pinging? need thoughts 200 1983

Pinging under load is NOT good for a engine and will lead to damage to the pistons, cylinder walls and/or valves. It's a slow process, but it will definitely shorten engine life. Your ignition timing can cause this if not properly set. You may also want to run a higher grade of fuel.
