The spring-loaded ball affairs at the trans cover are more to latch in the shift lever. With that long lever, if the spring gets weak and you go over a bump, the mass of the lever and shift-knob sometimes even pulls the shifter out of third gear. What actually latches the GEARS are the spring loaded (I believe they are called) "dogs" on the underside of the gear which that selector gear moves back and forth on (that's the best way I can describe it...an exploded view of the trans would help).
