Acceleration Problem - Intermittent 200 1987

could possibly be the catalytic converter...if they break up and block the exhaust intermittently, it could cause what you say. Turning off the car would then relieve the pressure and then it would be fine. If you hit the cat and it makes rustling noises, it's probably bad. Also, I was hitching a ride in a big ford van one time that had this exact problem and it turned out to be a weak fuel pump...go figure...maybe worth checking too.
