Tips on ECT replacement...... 200 1985

Dan -

I did this on the wifemobile - 1988 244 - and parts of the job were a PITA. First, that little sucker is way in there. Worse than the flame trap, behind the TB, and tough to see, much less reach.

Makes it an easier job by combining it with a full PCV service, removal of the oil box, and TB (yes, I know yours is spotless), and maybe re-locating the flame trap itself.

We had hell getting the harness off the ECT (Engine Coolant Temp) and needed three hands. Fortunately the wife helped, as I was unable to grow one.

Then it's easy. Loosen the ECT and then back to finger tight, keep the coolant dribbles to a min. You will note that if the oil box is off, coolant can dribble right into the crankcase. Lay in something to prevent that.

Next, have the new ECT handy. Then ASAP unscrew the old and screw in the new. Each should be easy to finger turn. Minimum coolant loss.

Reassemble. Use the IPD flame trap relocator kit, or DIY, or just put in the stuff for a 1988. Taller oil box, different hoses and flame trap cup, the trap is the same. Not cheap, but no more bloody knuckles, either. And a 15 min trap change thereafter.

Best luck,

Bob
