You may have to find the Beemer list to get anappropriate answer to this question. (we have enough trouble keeping the Volvo diesel info stirred up around here). But keep in mind that it is not uncommon for diesel head gaskets to run around $100 by themself (especially after the shop marks them up)and valve cover gaskets and assorted seals extra $$, plus the labour rate for the R&R, which depending on the setup of your engine can mean having to completly re-time the thing.

What kind of price did he quote you for the job?
